What Is Holistic Psychology?

The American Psychological Association (APA) defines Holistic Psychology as an approach based on the view that individuals are biological, psychological and socio-cultural totalities that cannot be fully explained in terms of individual components or characteristics. Therefore psychological phenomena must be studied as wholes.

Holistic Psychology is an integrative approach focusing on the relationship between mind, body and spirit attempting to understand and address the connection between  issues in one aspect of a person leading to concerns in other areas as well. A holistic therapy helps in becoming better attuned with the concept of ‘self’; promoting a heightened sense of self-awareness and self-acceptance.

Art therapy sessions can help harness one’s creativity; provide a conducive environment for freedom of expression without any rules or regulations. The emphasis is given to the creative process through making an inner connect rather than the art work or the product.

Alleviates Stress

Stress is one of the most pervasive reasons for mental health issues today. Stress management with the help of a holistic psychologist is known to alleviate stress, relaxes the mind and body and allows one to be more aware of self and the immediate surrounding.

At Totums Art Studio, using a combination of breathwork, paint and music the therapist facilitates a process of calm and mindfulness. Art therapy can be used at times of stress to help anchor an individual and cope better in a crisis.

Reduces Anxiety

Anxiety precedes a potentially undesirable situation, invariably leading to stress. Emotional well-being, self-awareness and general good health are apt approaches towards alleviating anxiety, thereby future stress. Art can be used as a medium to help an individual to get a better awareness about the nature of the anxiety they experience. Anxiety may be an ambiguous feeling that can leave one feeling helpless. By being able to identify the cause of one’s anxiety it becomes easier to manage it.

Enhances Creativity

Individuals experiencing difficulty discussing or remembering painful experiences often find a vent through various creative holistic psychotherapy methods. It allows people to express feelings on any subject through creative work, rather than speech which helps them connect with their innermost emotions in the most organic way possible. Our inner strength, wisdom and resilience is related to our intuition. Through art one can tap into their inner potential of possibilities and ideas.

Increases Productivity

Holistic Psychotherapy generates a heightened sense of self, helping one manage their emotions, aiding in personal development and personal growth. This results in a healthy mental well-being which in-turn increases productivity. Art is analogous to our lives in a certain way. Through art therapy an individual maybe able identify the blocks they may experience as an impediment to their productivity. Awareness is the key to change. Through knowledge and acceptance, one can learn how to reach their highest potential.
